Why Writing Persuasively Is A Must-Have Skill For The Future

The ability to write well in English holds significant importance in today's interconnected world and will likely
become even more valuable in the future for several reasons.

Hi. I am Deborah - one of the team at NTSs. Let me share some examples of when the ability to communicate effectively using writing (especially to achieve aims and goals) is a must.

Global Communication

English serves as the dominant language of international business, diplomacy, and academic discourse. Strong English writing skills enable individuals to participate effectively in global markets, collaborate across borders, and access opportunities that transcend geographical boundaries. As remote work and international partnerships continue to expand, clear written communication becomes essential for building professional relationships and conveying complex ideas across cultures.

Digital Age Requirements

In our increasingly digital world, much of our communication happens through written text—emails, reports, social media, websites, and digital marketing materials. The quality of written communication directly impacts professional credibility, brand perception, and the ability to influence and persuade audiences. Poor writing can undermine even the most innovative ideas or valuable products.

Qualifications and Standards

Without a English language pass (GCSE 4/5 or Functional Skills L2 in the UK), students face significant barriers to continuing their education beyond secondary school. In addition, a pass serves as proof of basic literacy skills that employers expect. The qualification demonstrates essential communication abilities needed for everyday life - reading complex documents, writing formal letters, understanding instructions, and expressing ideas clearly. These skills are fundamental for navigating modern society, from understanding contracts to communicating effectively in the workplace.

All of the examples of writing above require skills which can be learned and improved.

This seems like a good point to mention AI.

It certainly is an amazing tool to add to our metaphorical toolbox - for example, it can deal with automating repetitive tasks and processing vast amounts of data, and do so at high speed.

The downside of AI is that it needs careful oversight as it can produce incorrect or misleading information. It also can be ethically problematic. Anything written by AI needs to be checked, and often re-written. Anyone using AI to write material needs to have an understanding of written English as it should be - essentially the human overseeing needs to have a high standard written English skills. And of course, anyone sitting an exam will be expected to respond to exam questions without the assistance of AI. We don’t know what may happen in the future, but currently, the ability to write in good quality English is a must for living in the modern world.
