Core Skills For Writing Texts In English

In the first blog of this series, Why Writing Persuasively Is A Must-Have Skill For The Future, I looked at three reasons why the ability to write in good quality English is so important - and will still be important in the future. The reasons were:

  • Global Communication

  • Digital Age Requirements

  • Qualifications and Standards

Certainly, if you are wanting to move up to the next step in your education (university?) or advance your career (promotion? leadership?), then it is essential that you start working on improving your communication skills, including writing. And the ability to write persuasively in English has become one of the most valuable skills in the modern world and will only grow in importance as competition for attention and resources intensifies.

Persuasive Writing?

You may be wondering why NTSs has produced several English language courses which are entitled persuasively (e.g. Communicating Persuasively, Speaking Persuasively and Writing Persuasively). What is meant by this? What type of texts are often written in this style? Why is the ability to write in English to persuade or influence people so essential?

Writing To Influence And Persuade?

Basically, it is writing that uses a style that encourages the reader to do whatever the writer is wanting. For example, the main aim underlying the text that is being written might be to get someone to buy something. Advertising is usually written in a persuasive style. Another example could be that the main aim of the text is to agree with (or at least understand) the writer’s point of view. Speeches are also often therefore written in a persuasive mode. It is important to understand that this type of writing is not supposed to be unethical or manipulative (although it can be if in the wrong hands!).

Text Types?

Lots of different texts incorporate persuasive techniques, features and language. It depends on the purpose of the writer, and there can be more than one purpose at play. So, for example, a leaflet produced by the NHS could be designed to inform readers about well-being provision in the area where the reader lives, but it may also include advice with regard to well-being practices for everyday life and a persuasive element to encourage readers to use what provision is on offer.
